Baking By Hand

Baking

Thirty years ago when my husband was in graduate school, I had a lot of free time on my hands. A friend handed me a bread-baking book and said, “Here. Try this. It’s fun and it’s food.”

We had no money and lived on a food budget of $17 per week. We lived in a tiny basement apartment. We had a standard apartment oven and no other bread-baking equipment, but I baked anyway and the breads came out of the oven smelling good and tasting better. My love of baking took off.

Since those days long ago, I’ve raised three children and lived in nine houses in seven cities. I was busy and moving—always moving. Along the way, I baked bread—lots of bread. Not only was bread-baking fun, it was therapeutic. There were times when baking kept me sane.

Today, many of my friends say they don’t have time to bake, or they don’t know how and are afraid to try. But baking can be easy and fun, and it doesn’t have to be time-consuming.

That’s why I’m offering small hands-on classes in bread-baking—to revive the art, the joy, and the fun of baking by hand. So come out to the farm, have a cup of tea, enjoy good company, get some flour in your hair, and give it a try. You’ll be glad you did. I promise!
